Subject: I don't look Jewish - what do I do about it?
I am one of those Jews who don't look remotely semitic. It certainly doesn't bother me, but sometimes I will encounter such personal, out-of-the-blue comments as "You're a convert, aren't you?"
Not long ago, I used a Yiddish word when speaking to somebody, and she said to me "Now where would YOU know Yiddish from?" And worse, a busybody of a neighbor actually asked me in a nasty, holier than thou voice if my mother was Jewish.
Now the truth is that I was born Jewish (I must stress that if I were a convert I certainly wouldn't be ashamed of it), but I do think my "status" as a Jew is entirely my own affair. I don't have a problem with telling these people to mind their own business, but when I have done so in the past I have always felt that they have taken it as that I've got something to hide.
According to the halachah, we are forbidden to bring up someone's either non-religious or non-Jewish past, but these inquisitors (and some of them have been very religious) don't seem to care that their comments and insinuations embarrass me and can be very hurtful.Has anyone got any suggestions as to how I can deal with this issue?
